I was able to pick mine (M nib) up in store and was surprised at just how much more beautiful it was in person. It is a little more blue in the faintly translucent resin, and if you put it in the light, you see so many different colors shining out at you on the body, as well as the beautiful domed finial! The build of the pen felt solid and well made. Nothing that felt like they skimped on quality materials. The little keyhole on the nib (apparently made in house per Dominant Industry ads) is just the cherry on top of this beautifully themed, beautifully presented, elegant and just lovely pen. You feel like you were Elizabeth Bennett journaling about how much Mr Darcy annoys her as he comes upon her at the beautiful hotel design on the box. The nib wrote first time, every time. I have had it inked up and no hard starts, no misalignment on the nib. It’s smooth on paper, but not skating off the page. A good portion of the extra weight in the pen is in the cap, and I found that I preferred writing with it unposted. (I have S/M hands) and it’s absolutely comfortable, while still feeling substantial. Long writing sessions were comfortable. The grip section is a nice length, the threads are not uncomfortable. It’s a wide enough grip section, about the same diameter as a Pilot Kakuno (around 10.5 to 11) with a slight taper down, to a gentle flair out with a rose gold color metal band and the end. It’s not slippery, and unlike some other pens, I don’t feel myself sliding down onto the nib, and the lip at the end does not cause any discomfort.
The pen is a stunner, well constructed, the nib is tuned beautifully, and isn’t ‘bouncy’ nor is it writing with a nail, it is a strong nib with a little give that keeps the hand from feeling over tired fighting a “nail nib” or out of control while writing with something just a little too bouncy. I’m so impressed, I was so looking forward to this release and my hopes were all realized. Two thumbs up, highly recommend this pen (and the ink that comes with it is gorgeous.) Additionally, compared to other pens, the price point of $115 at the time of this review is a relative bargain compared to other pens in it’s same ‘ballpark’ like the Esterbrook Estie, with no sacrifice to quality or attention to detail.
I also want to extend my compliments to the store owner who helped me pick out the pen, patiently chattered with me and is always so friendly and kind whenever people come into the store. The store has a nice, relaxed, vintage (yet modern) feel to it, and everywhere you look, you’ll find a new little treasure. I’m so glad that she is increasing (a ton!) the number and brands of fountain pens, inks and FPF paper! STL has a Pen Store!! With nice friendly people who go the extra mile with service and customer satisfaction. Everyone is welcome there, so come in and try a fountain pen out!
I’ve seen these occasionally on Levenger and Hobonichi, but they’re hard to get your hands on. If you’re like me, and you want your notebook/journal/planner to be held shut quickly and easily without having bumps to write over or snap closures to keep falling on the page, this is a great fix. Have every notebook be as it should be like a Leuchtturm, a Kokuyo Soofa, or an Archer and Olive…held together with an easy on and off closure. Also, I love red, and I can use it on any notebook(s) I happen to be carrying around. Good quality elastic and metal closure, should last quite a while with no issues.
So excited that Papillon Press decided to start stocking Diamine (along with all of the other cool inks.) You can always count on Diamine to have a great ink, at a great price. It’s a big bottle, but it gives you plenty to share samples with friends! Meadow is a lovely warm spring green, not neon, very legible and just perfect for this time of year. Great staple color to use for all sorts of things you can do with fountain pen ink, also.
I’ve found the Tsubame Fools paper to be really nice to write on, and it handles pretty much whatever pen you’re using. As I tend to be in two different places for working on my journal/planner, I love that it comes as two separate blocks. Very convenient! (Also, I accidentally ordered Kokuyo glue runner in “temporary” but then realized, I can make a post-it note with the paper if I choose to (didn’t know such a thing existed) so, now they’re extra useful!
Got the twsbi eco in this color way in a broad nib. Writes super smooth and juicy. I don't write with it posted because it feels a little heavy. I'll probably buy one in medium nib for myself too since I like how my son's writes
Writes super nicely. Got for my 15 year old son and he's been enjoying it too.
Beautiful, smart, stylish, one-of-a-kine greeting cards. . .among many other things!
Absolutely love this color. The shipping was quick and the little thank you note was a loovely touch. Will be a repeat consumer with this small business. :)
This pen is a show stopper and write incredibly smooth. Great for a first time fountain pen or 5th. Lamy collectors-- it is a must have!
What beautiful paper and hand painted print! I love having Papillion Press in our neighborhood!
I sent this perfect gift to my sister. She loves everything I send her from Papillion.
Great store and people with wonderful products.
Love this pen and Papillon Press is a great place to visit too.
This was my second Esterbrook pen and it hasn’t disappointed. I never really understood what people meant by “nice feedback” when discussing a nib, but I understand now. This feels so great to write with and has great feedback without being scratchy at all. I love coming in and talking to the lovely ladies who work here about pens, ink, paper, etc.
